How Long of a Putter Should I Use

The majority of golfers are aware of how significant their putting game is to their overall ability to shoot lower scores while out on the course. In point of fact, if your putting stroke is consistently low, you will have a far higher chance of improving your total performance. When you reflect back on your rounds when you had the lowest score, you’ll notice that they are also the ones in which you had the fewest number of putts.

It is far less probable that you will constantly have poor drives, despite the fact that the performance of your drives will most definitely be a factor in your total performance. Putting is the most important skill in golf since getting the ball into the hole rests almost entirely on your ability to make putts. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that having the appropriate putter length is of the utmost importance to your game.

How to Measure the Length of a Putter

Compared to other golf clubs, the putter doesn’t often receive the credit it deserves. And it’s not just because it’s the shortest club in the set, This club lacks both the adaptability of a wedge and the strength of a driver in its arsenal of golfing tools. But the putter is the one that ultimately decides how well you perform in each round, maybe even more than any other club. If you look at the statistics of a round in which you played poorly, you will most likely discover that you putted the ball more times than was required.

But if you look at the statistics of a round in which you played really well, you may have only used that club a small handful of times. A quality putter may make the difference between your best score and your worst score while you’re playing golf. Understanding how to take the club’s length measurement is a necessary step before going out and acquiring the ideal one.

Does the Length of the Putter Really Matter?

Putter length does have a significant role. The length of your putter will determine the success of your putting stroke. Therefore, if the length is improper, your swing arc will be a disaster, and so will the trajectory of the golf ball. This is because the two are dependent on one another. That, in turn, causes the ball to deviate from its intended path.

The length of the putter has a direct influence on the lie angle that is determined when the golf ball is addressed. You need to ensure that the lie angle of each of your golf clubs, not only the putter, is correct. The loft of the putter will force the ball off the target if the putterface is not flat or square when it is addressed. This is not because you are shooting incorrectly or off-target; rather, the problem is that the lie and loft angles are completely improper.

How Long of a Putter Should I Use?

The primary reason why the length of this club is important is because of the effect it has on the setup you utilize. Balance, center, and angle are the three components that should be present in an ideal setup for a swing. You aim to strike a balance in the distribution of your weight between your feet. You should position your shoulders so that they are evenly spaced on each side of the ball, and your body should be positioned such that it is directly above the ball.

Last but not least, you need to check that nothing is pointing in the opposite way to ensure that your angle is accurate. Your center of gravity, balance, and angle will all be incorrect if you are using a club that is either too long or too short for you. Putters may be measured in a variety of different ways. Your height, what you’re seeking in a putter, and how you hold the putter will all have a significant impact on the outcome. Thus, here are some facts to help you choose the optimal length for your putter.

Height Check

You need to start by determining your own height. A golfer who is 6’4 inches tall would measure the length of their putter quite differently from a player who is 5’2 inches tall.

Prepare

Take the stance as if you were going to put it into action. You should angle your body slightly by standing over a ball with your back slightly arched and your knees bent.

Arms Down

While keeping your posture for putting, let your arms hang naturally down at your sides. Create a grip as if you were holding an invisible club after you’ve achieved a natural stance, similar to the one you’ll use while you’re putting.

Measure

Record on a tape measures the distance that must be traveled to reach the grass from the opening in your hands. Although some people prefer to measure the distance with a real putter, it’s important to acquire both readings so you can cross-reference and compare the results.

Check Against A Putter

Now that you know how far your hands are from the ground while you are not carrying a putter, you should test your measurements when you are really holding one. Put the putter you currently own in your hand and hold it with a comfortable grip. It is not the posture that you believe you should have but rather the precision of your actual stroke that you want to assess. Take the average of these lengths against each other to get the perfect length for your height and posture.

Should I Invest in a Putter That Is 34 or 35 Inches Long?

It could be helpful to know that the majority of golfers who use putters with a head length of 35 inches are either taller than 6 feet or have a stance that is more upright. For golfers who are 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, the ideal putter length is 34 inches.

Are Putter Fittings Truly Worth It?

Getting a professional putter fitting can only help if you are a player who puts a high value on growing or enhancing your golfing skills. Professional fittings allow you to get the putter that is optimized for your game in terms of length, weight, head size, and grip size. However, if you are just learning the game of golf or are an average golfer, a putter fit is not required.
